The Play2Support Pairs Competition is for men’s, ladies and mixed pairs playing in the stableford format.
Play2Support is a not for profit social enterprise based in Ovingham, Northumberland, set up for the purpose of raising money for charity through sporting competitions. It is a concept devised and directed by Paul Nash FRSA. Back in 2010, Paul was diagnosed with and treated for prostate cancer. He was described as one of the ‘lucky ones’, caught early and removed using laparoscopic surgery with no follow-up chemo or radio therapy. Since then he has supported the work of Prostate Cancer UK through awareness and fund raising activities and is an active member of the North East Volunteer Support Hub. Play2Support emerged as a result of this work and his love of golf.
This competition is for all clubs from across the Cumbria, Northumberland, Durham and North Yorkshire golf unions. John Carver, the former manager of Newcastle United, has agreed to endorse the competition. John is an excellent fit for a sporting competition of this nature, he has an extensive career in football management and coaching going back over 25 years, he is a sometime pundit on Sky Sports and an active member of Close House Golf Club.
With its format of ladies, mens and mixed pairs the competition will help, 'to encourage as many women as possible to...experience the best of what our sport can offer...Golf is one of the few sports in which men and women can compete alongside each other, which is something that we should be celebrating.'
